El Dia De Los Muertos: Day of the Dead
October 28 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
This widely observed holiday focuses on remembering family members and friends who have passed away. This originates from the ancient indigenous peoples of Mexico who believed that the souls of the dead return each year to visit with their living relatives – to eat, drink and be merry. Just like they did when they were living.
This free family-friendly event includes a traditional colored straw demonstration by Cesar Carbajal as well as the preparation of an altar where members of the community can share a prayer, light a candle or bring a memento to place as an offering for loved ones. Activities include face painting, costume contest, sidewalk chalk drawing, and exploring the VMFA On the Road Artmobile. Craft stations include making paper marigolds, Day of the Dead masks, skull magnets and creating papel picado. Food trucks will be onsite.
