The Battle of Hampton: Virginia’s First Revolutionary Battle

October 24 @ 9:00 am - October 26 @ 2:00 pm

Hundreds of participants in Revolutionary era attire with period specific weaponry representing patriot and British forces, several sailing ships and other vessels, and costumed historical interpreters will assemble along the waterfront and adjacent areas of Downtown Hampton to recreate a critical moment in the American Revolution, The Battle of Hampton – Virginia’s first battle in the war – on the weekend of October 21-26, 2025

The 1775 confrontation was the turning point in Virginia’s transition from resistance to rebellion. It is the story of a land and sea battle during which the Virginia forces at Hampton boldly resisted and repulsed a British Royal Navy Squadron. The battle’s origins and outcomes were also significantly tied to enslaved people’s continuing resistance. The era of the American Revolution was a struggle for liberty in many different forms. Some sought freedom from restrictions on trade or for political equality, while others sought freedom from slavery or other oppression.

Over the course of three days, Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26, 2025, the City of Hampton will explore this profoundly American story. Attendees will experience a Revolutionary-era military encampment and port where they will have the opportunity interact with Patriots (Virginia soldiers), Loyalists, the British Army and Ethiopian Regiment, the British Royal Navy, Freedom Seekers and other residents from the port town of Hampton. Several authentic wooden ships will be in the Hampton Marina to portray British Royal Navy sloops and schooners.

In Mill Point Park, visitors will explore an 18th century military camp buzzing with activities including military drills, cooking, domestic activities, and recreation like games, music and dance. Individual stories of the people of Hampton will be examined through both living history programming and pop-up exhibits. Throughout the weekend, visitors will explore the ships engaged in the battle that changed American history and the City of Hampton’s “Arc of Freedom” and Maritime Heritage.
