Exploration Day: From the Sea to the Stars

Take a plunge into the past and soar to the moon and back with us as we explore Hampton’s history from the days of the Kikotan people before the arrival of the English to the pioneering work done here in aviation and space exploration!
Historical Interpreters bring to life celebrated heroes to share their stories. Meet 18th century boat pilot Cesar Tarrant, who was enslaved and served the Virginia Navy. Learn about his pivotal role in the Revolutionary War Battle of Hampton. One of Hampton’s “Human Computers” Mary W. Jackson, one of the “Hidden Figures” made famous in the best-selling book and hit film by Margot Shetterly, shares her life and accomplishments.
Other highlights include a presentation by former NASA Administrator Clayton Turner speaking about NASA’s history in Hampton. Our historians, curators, and other museum professionals will talk about how museum collect and use artifacts to tell stories.
Set sail to win our “Gutter Regatta” by making and racing your own miniature sailboat. Mesmerize your friends with an Ocean Waves Activity you can craft using a jar and various oils and food coloring. Learn how mariners navigated by the stars with an astrolabe.
