Join us for another segment of the African Landing Commemoration Symposium. Curious about descendants of the ship White Lion that docked at Point Comfort in 1619 and the next captives brought to Virginia? Did you know that in 1628, the ship Fortune attacked another Portuguese slave ship and captured approximately 100 Africans who were brought to Virginia? Between 1619 and 1628, other ships, unknown to most of us, brought Africans to Virginia.
The William Tucker 1624 Society will host an invigorating lecture and dialogue with descendant families of the White Lion and later ships in the English Colony (1619–1628). Meet Ric Murphy, Dr. Edward Davis, Dr. Wanda Tucker, and Jacqueline Royster.
Moderator Dr. Sesha Moon, Chief Diversity Officer and Director of DEI for the Commonwealth of Virginia, will lead discussions on identity, research, and how the omission of narratives about the next groups of Africans brought to Virginia led to assumptions about African Americans. Discussions will conclude with how to move forward as a collective.
