Crawlin' Crab Half Marathon, 5K, Kids Kilometer & Shell Yeah Challenge (Oct. 6-8)Presented by Bon Secours In Motion. All Half Marathon runners "crawl" past the beautiful waterfront in downtown Hampton making their way down the historic Chesapeake Ave. and back to the Hampton Roads Convention Center for a crawlin' fun time at the post-race party. The Crawlin’ Crab 5K starts and finishes in front of the Hampton Roads Convention Center.  The Shell Yeah Challenge is for participants who wish to run both the 5k and half marathon. All runners are invited to a post-race party with live music, food and a craft brew festival.

Sweet Honey in the RockFeel the rhythm and hear the soulful sounds of the Grammy-nominated Sweet Honey in the Rock as African American musical genres including blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, reggae, African chants, hip-hop, and jazz improvisation come together for a powerful evening. The all-female performance ensemble has been entertaining and empowering audiences for more than 40 years and continues their legacy as artists and activists. The group recently released their latest album, #LoveInEvolution, a critically acclaimed collection that showcases their prowess as stunning vocalists and compelling songwriters. Sweet Honey in the Rock will fill the American Theatre with intricate harmonies and pulsating rhythms that celebrate the world’s diverse cultures.

Hampton Snowbird Rendezvous (12-15)Cruisers from across the Eastern Seaboard will head to Hampton for the fourth annual Hampton Snowbird Rendezvous. Taking place at the Hampton Public Piers (located in the heart of the city’s downtown district) the event will feature cruising-related educational seminars, entertainment by local bands, tours of area attractions, food from Hampton’s finest restaurants, and more. Discounted dockage will be provided for seminar attendees.

14 | Festival of South African Dance

Festival of South African DanceFans of “stepping,” a modern form of gumboot, have seen this dance style’s momentous popularity through the Step Up movie series and So You Think You Can Dance, and now is the chance to experience the origins of this unique form of entertainment and storytelling. The rhythms of South Africa come alive with the Festival of South African Dance’s pulsating production of Gumboots – Stimela the Musical, a dance masterpiece that follows the tale of rural African men who come by train from all walks of life in search of greener pastures in the city of gold, Johannesburg. Gumboot dance emerged from a form of communication in the gold mines and has evolved into a dynamic language of rhythm and music that is performed worldwide as a celebration of South African history.

15 | Totentanz & Brahms’ Symphony No. 2

Totentanz & Brahms’ Symphony No. 2To celebrate its 5th year anniversary, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic kicks off its season with an energetic and dramatic program of Berlioz, Liszt, and Brahms.  The Roman Carnival Overture by Berlioz opens the program with sweeping melodies and a mood of unreserved celebration.  Piano soloist Ben Corbin, pictured, performs the intense and moody Totentanz ("Dance of the Death") by Liszt.  Finishing the program is Brahms' Symphony No. 2, a symphonic masterpiece that invokes a pastoral mood, playfulness, meloncholy, and ultimately, triumph.

Fort Monroe Ghost Walk (20-21)Come and discover where history meets mystery! Learn the hidden secrets of Fort Monroe’s rich 400-year history during our guided ghost walks. Tours begin every 20 minutes from 6:00 p.m. -9:30 p.m. and will last approximately 45 minutes. Tours are rain or shine. 20 | Riddick Dance presents: The King Project

Riddick Dance presents: The King ProjectIn collaboration, choreographers David Riddick and Marshall Swiney are creating a full evening of multimedia dance theater collage. The performance is in commemoration of the rewriting of Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech, Letter from Birmingham jail, and I’ve Been to the Mountain Top speech. By placing Dr. King’s very important writings in a performance setting, the two choreographers explore not just the meaning of the text, but create a fusion of contemporary movement with sounded oration, blurring the boundaries between the speech and dance performance.

These 60-minute tours include eerie tales of Old Hampton and the Coastal Virginia area. The tour will encounter actors portraying the first witch recorded in America, ghosts of Civil War soldiers, pirates from Blackbeard's Crew, a speakeasy proprietor, escaped prisoners, yellow fever victims, and more characters from the city's tales of mystery and the macabre. Each tour will include the grisly side of Hampton history; special surprises and a spooky lantern tour of the St. John's Church graveyard, and other points of fright along Queen Street and around downtown Hampton.

Salty Dawg Rally (Oct. 24-Nov.1)Departing from Hampton on the last day to sail to BVI or the Bahamas, the group will gather prior to the Rally, prepare their boats for the passage, and meet their fellow Dawgs!  Bluewater Yachting Center Pavilion will be the meeting center for daily weather briefings, various seminars, a pig roast, a chicken barbecue, a chili cook-off and potluck dinners.
